BYT Acting Together 2022-23

This project brought together Brixton Youth Theatre and the Wheatsheaf Community Hall, Vauxhall, with refugees and asylum seekers housed in the borough of Lambeth.

The programme took place over 39 weeks, during school terms, and was designed to help young people to develop their English language skills, increase confidence and self-esteem, and improve social and communication skills.

Sessions included drama, storytelling and performing arts as a tool to aid the personal development of the children. The activities also included warm-up games, tai chi, devising, and arts and crafts.

The professional drama coaches from BYT, with the support of a pastoral care assistant, succeeded in providing a safe, welcoming environment, enabling the project aims to be achieved as well as supporting participant’s parents.

In addition to the sessions at Wheatsheaf Community Hall, Brixton Community Based actively encouraged participation in other projects and programmes, for both children and parents.
